The "Is Your Patient Suicidal?" Emergency Department Poster and Clinical Guide provide emergency department personnel with information on recognizing and responding to acute suicide risk. The accompanying guide, Suicide Risk: A Guide for ED Evaluation and Triage, provides additional clinical guidance for ED personnel. The Saving Our Lives: Transgender Suicide Myths, Reality and Help brochure is intended for the transgender community, and friends and family transgendered individuals. The Supportive Families, Healthy Children: Helping Families with Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Children booklet is a research-derived resource that educates diverse families on how to support their LGBT children; provides key prevention information for a range of readers; and teaches providers how to talk with families about decreasing risk for suicidality and related risks among LGBT youth and young adults. Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) is a standardized and customizable 14-hour, two-trainer suicide prevention workshop designed for members of all caregiving groups. ASIST requires instruction by a qualified trainer. Training is available from LivingWorks or qualified trainers for a fee.

Ask 4 Help! is a one-hour high school based curriculum that provides students with knowledge that may increase help-seeking for themselves or on behalf of others. It requires a certified Yellow Ribbon trainer. Ask 4 Help!  is available from Yellow Ribbon for a fee.

Assessing and Managing Suicide Risk (AMSR) is a one-day workshop for mental health professionals that will help them better assess suicide risk, plan treatment, and manage the ongoing care of at-risk clients. AMSR requires instruction by a qualified trainer. Training is available from the SPRC Training Institute for a fee.

At-Risk for University and College Faculty: Identifying and Referring Students in Mental Distress is a 45-minute, web-based training simulation that gives higher education faculty and staff the knowledge necessary to identify and refer students exhibiting symptoms of mental distress, including depression, anxiety, and thoughts of suicide. It is available from Kognito Interactive for a fee.

Be A Link! is a two-hour adult gatekeeper training program that provides participants with knowledge to help them identify youth at risk for suicide and refer them to appropriate help resources. Be A Link!  requires a certified Yellow Ribbon trainer. It is available from Yellow Ribbon for a fee.

Campus Connect is an experientially based gatekeeper training program for college and university faculty, staff, and students. Training is available from Syracuse University for a fee.

The Connect Suicide Postvention Program is a six-hour or three-day train-the-trainer program for professionals that increases the capacity of a community or organization to respond effectively to a suicide in order to prevent additional suicides. Connect Postvention training is a proactive planning tool for promoting healing and reducing risk after a suicide death. Training is available from NAMI New Hampshire for a fee.

Connect Suicide Prevention/Intervention Training is a six-hour or three-day train-the-trainer program in suicide prevention/intervention across the lifespan for professionals and laypersons. Using a unique socio-ecological model, Connect examines suicide in the context of the individual, family, tribe, community and society. Training is available from NAMI-New Hampshire for a fee.

EndingSuicide.com is a two-hour web-based suicide prevention training for teachers and other school professionals. It is available online from Med Student Learning at no charge.

HELP is a one-hour school-based suicide awareness program that targets youth 14-19 years of age. It is available from HeartLine Oklahoma at no charge for groups within Oklahoma. HELP requires a qualified instructor. It is currently unavailable outside of Oklahoma.

Helping Every Living Person: Depression and Suicide Prevention Curriculum (HELP) is a high school curriculum that addresses depression and suicide prevention. The curriculum is divided into four 45-minute lesson plans. The curriculum package is available from the Washington Youth Suicide Prevention Program for a fee.

Gatekeeper Suicide Prevention Program: A High School Curriculum is a four-hour curriculum that addresses: identification of those exhibiting risk behaviors; asking about behaviors of concern; and referral of those possibly at-risk to a trusted adult. It requires a qualified Gryphon Place instructor and is available from Gryphon Place for a fee.

LEADS for Youth is an interactive high school curriculum that addresses depression, suicide, and help-seeking. The curriculum is divided into three one-hour lessons. The curriculum package is available from Suicide Awareness Voices of Education (SAVE) for a fee.

LOOK LISTEN LINK is a middle school curriculum focused on identifying causes of stress along with healthy ways of coping with stress and anxiety. The curriculum is divided into four 45-minute lessons. The curriculum package is available from the Washington Youth Suicide Prevention Program for a fee.

Making Educators Partners in Youth Suicide Prevention is an online gatekeeper training program for educators and school staff that addresses the critical but limited responsibilities of educators in the process of identifying and referring potentially suicidal youth. It is available online from the Society for the Prevention of Teen Suicide without charge.

More Than Sad: Teen Depression is a high school curriculum featuring a 26-minute film and discussion guide that includes positive vignettes of four teens with depression who seek help in different ways. It is available from the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention for a fee.

Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR) is a one- to two-hour gatekeeper training that teaches lay and professional gatekeepers to recognize and respond positively to someone exhibiting suicide warning signs and behaviors. QPR requires instruction by a qualified trainer. Training is available from the QPR Institute or a qualified trainer for a fee.

RESPONSE is a comprehensive high school-based program that increases awareness about suicide among high school staff, students and parents and is designed to heighten sensitivity to depression and suicidal ideation, increase identification, and facilitate referral. It is available from ColumbiaCare for a fee.

Sources of Strength is a comprehensive wellness program that uses peer and caring adult relationships to improve social norms, enhance coping and social support, and increase help-seeking behaviors in order to reduce conditions that give rise to suicide and other risk-taking behaviors. Sources of Strength requires training by a qualified instructor. Training is available from Sources of Strength for a fee.

SafeTALK is a half-day training program that teaches participants to recognize and engage persons who might be having thoughts of suicide and connect them with community resources trained in suicide intervention. SafeTALK requires training by a qualified instructor. Training is available from SafeTALK or qualified instructors for a fee.

The Army ACE Suicide Intervention Program is a three-hour training that provides soldiers with the awareness, knowledge, and skills necessary to intervene with those at risk for suicide. The training package is available from the U.S. Army without charge.

CALM: Counseling on Access to Lethal Means is a two-hour workshop designed to help mental health providers implement counseling strategies to help clients and their families reduce access to lethal means, particularly (but not exclusively) firearms. Training is required. CALM is available from the Injury Prevention Center at Children’s Hospital at Dartmouth for a fee.

Gryphon Place Gatekeeper Suicide Prevention Program: A Middle School Curriculum is a universal prevention program for Grades 7-8, developed by Gryphon Place. It requires a qualified Gryphon Place instructor and is available from Gryphon Place for a fee.

Recognizing and Responding to Suicide Risk: Essential Skills for Clinicians is an advanced two-day interactive training for mental health clinicians who want to acquire competency-based skills for working with clients at risk for suicide. RRSR requires instruction by a qualified trainer. Training is available from the American Association of Suicidology for a fee.

Working Minds: Suicide Prevention in the Workplace is a training toolkit that helps administrators and employees better understand and prevent suicide. Training can be organized into a one-hour, 1.5-hour, or 3.5-hour session. The toolkit is available from the Carson J Spencer Foundation for a fee.

Student Support Network (SSN) is a six-week gatekeeper training program for selected college students. The SSN training manual is available from Worcester Polytechnic Institute without charge. Training for trainers is available for a fee.

QPRT Suicide Risk Assessment and Management Training Program is a ten hour course for health professionals that is designed to reduce mental health consumer morbidity and mortality by standardizing the detection, assessment, and management of patients at elevated risk for suicidal behaviors in all settings and across the age span. Training is conducted online or face-to-face by a qualified QPRT instructor. Training is available from the QPR Institute for a fee.

Let's Talk Gatekeeper Training is a two-hour gatekeeper training program for foster parents and other adults who care for children. Instructional materials are available from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health without charge.

The School Suicide Prevention Accreditation program is a self-study course for school professionals who want to increase their knowledge of school-based suicide prevention issues. The course is appropriate for those who work in school settings or work with school-age youth, including school psychologists, social workers, counselors, nurses, and others who may be responsible for reducing suicide and suicide-related behaviors. It is available from the American Association of Suicidology for a fee.

More Than Sad: Suicide Prevention Education for Teachers and Other School Personnel is a 2-hour program designed to help educators better understand suicidal behavior in adolescents, including its causes, treatment and prevention. The program pre-packaged and features two 25-minute DVDs: More Than Sad: Preventing Teen Suicide and More Than Sad: Teen Depression. The latter film, intended especially for teens, was previously reviewed and listed in the BPR. More Than Sad is available from the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention for a fee.

Recognizing and Responding to Suicide Risk in Primary Care (RRSR-PC) is a one-hour facilitated training for primary care physicians, physician assistants, and others who work in primary care settings. The training will help them better identify, manage, and treat adult patients who are at risk for suicide. Training is deliverable face-to-face or by webinar.  Training is available from the American Association of Suicidology for a fee.

Operation S.A.V.E. is a one- to two-hour gatekeeper training program provided by VA suicide prevention coordinators to veterans and those who serve veterans. The training provides information on warning signs of suicide, how to ask about suicide, and helping those at risk for suicide. Operation S.A.V.E. is available from the VA at no charge.

SOS Signs of Suicide Middle School Program is a three lesson curriculum that encourages student help-seeking by instructing students how to ACT® (Acknowledge, Care and Tell) in the face of a mental health emergency. The program includes an optional student screening that assesses for depression and suicide risk, and awareness and training information for teachers and parents. The SOS Middle School program is available from Screening for Mental Health, Inc. for a fee

The Suicide Prevention Multicultural Competence Kit is a set of awareness materials geared toward developing multicultural competence among mental health professionals who work with diverse college students, and also among community members of a college or university. Its aim is to help people understand the mental health needs of diverse students in order to prevent suicide. The kit is available from the PACE University Counseling Center for no charge.

Suicide Prevention Training for Gatekeepers of Older Adults is an 8-hour gatekeeper training program for those who have regular contact with older adults through their personal, professional or volunteer activities. Training is funded by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, and is available to qualifying institutions in Massachusetts for no charge.

The Late Life Suicide Prevention Toolkit is an educational program developed for use by front-line providers, medical and mental health care clinicians, and health care trainees. It focuses on how to identify suicide warning signs, establish rapport and assess suicide risk and resiliency factors, and manage immediate and ongoing risk for suicide among older adults. Online copies are available for without charge. Printed copies are available for a small fee.

At-Risk for High School Educators is a one-hour, online, interactive gatekeeper training program that teaches high school educators how to (1) identify students exhibiting signs of psychological distress, including depression and thoughts of suicide; (2) approach students to discuss their concern; and (3) make a referral to school support services. It is available from Kognito Interactive for a fee.

The Safety Plan Treatment Manual to Reduce Suicide Risk: Veteran Version was developed by Barbara Stanley, Ph.D., of Columbia University, and Gregory K. Brown, Ph.D., of the University of Pennsylvania, in collaboration with VA staff. The 20-page Treatment Manual provides instructions for developing a safety plan for Veterans who are at risk for suicide. A corresponding Safety Plan Quick Guide for Clinicians pocket card is also available. The steps outlined in the Treatment Manual and Quick Guide are recommended for use whenever a Veteran is identified as an attempt survivor, or is otherwise identified as being at high-risk for suicide.

Teens for Life Program: Youth Curriculum is an interactive classroom-based suicide prevention program for high school and middle school students and youth served by community-based agencies. The one-hour curriculum is taught by personnel trained by Crisis Support Services of Alameda County, and is available without charge for schools and youth-serving agencies in Alameda County California.

At-Risk for University and College Students is a 30-minute, online, interactive gatekeeper training program that teaches students how to (1) identify students exhibiting signs of psychological distress, including depression and thoughts of suicide; (2) approach students to discuss their concern; and (3) make referrals to university counseling centers. It is available from Kognito Interactive for a fee.

How Not To Keep A Secret (HNTKAS) is a peer leader training program designed to provide education to teens about depression and suicide, increase help-seeking behaviors, and decrease stigma associated with mental illness. The day-long HNTKAS training includes a clinical presentation, the documentary Break Free from Depression, and interactive activities. HNTKAS is available from the Youth Health Connection for a fee.

The DORA College Program (Depression OutReach Alliance) is a one-hour peer-based mental health wellness and suicide prevention program. DORA’s primary teaching tool is an educational DVD that profiles college students who struggled with depression and suicidal ideation and are now in recovery thanks to the support of peers and mental health professionals. DORA is available from Screening for Mental Health for a fee.

Survivor Voices: Sharing the Story of Suicide Loss is a two-day training designed to teach those bereaved by suicide how to speak safely and effectively about their experience and loss. The training prepares each participant to tell his or her story to various audiences, enhances public speaking skills, the ability to respond safely to audience and media questions, and provides education about suicide prevention and resources for survivors of suicide loss. LifeSavers Training is a three-day suicide and crisis prevention program that trains high school and college-aged young people to listen to peers compassionately and confidentially using specialized techniques designed to help them make healthier decisions. It is Program Description.

Family of Heroes: Training for Family Members of Veterans is a one-hour, online, interactive gatekeeper training simulation that teaches family members of veterans how to (1) identify signs of post-deployment stress, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), traumatic brain injury (TBI), depression, and thoughts of suicide; (2) approach veterans to discuss their concern, and (3) make a referral to a mental health support service such as the Veterans Health Administration (VHA). Family of Heroes is available from Kognito Interactive for a fee.

Lifelines Intervention: Helping Students At Risk for Suicide is designed to facilitate intervention with, and referral of, potentially at-risk students by providing school resource staff with a manualized approach to the assessment and referral process. The Lifelines Intervention manual includes a DVD that illustrates specific techniques for use with challenging students and with parents who may be resistant to either the conversation about suicide risk or referral for an off-campus mental health evaluation. In Harm’s Way: Law Enforcement Suicide Prevention is an eight-hour train-the-trainers program that provides a comprehensive, holistic approach to stress management and suicide prevention for law enforcement and corrections professionals in order to reduce suicide risk. Those who complete the program return to their departments to train administrators, officers, and staff on suicide prevention. It is available without charge from the Center for Public Safety Innovation at St. Petersburg College.

Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR) for Law Enforcement is a 90-minute online training program that teaches law enforcement professionals how to detect, intervene with, and refer someone at risk for suicide. Adapted from the broader Question, Persuade, and Refer emergency mental health gatekeeper training intervention, it teaches members of the law enforcement community to recognize and respond positively to someone exhibiting suicide warning signs and behaviors. QPR for Law Enforcement is available from the QPR Institute for a fee.

At-Risk in the ED is a one-hour, online, interactive training simulation that teaches Emergency Department (ED) staff how to (1) recognize patients who exhibit warning signs of suicide and substance abuse risk, (2) screen patients for suicide and substance abuse risk, and (3) respond to patients who screen positive for suicide and substance abuse risk. It is available from Kognito Interactive for a fee.

Connect Youth Leaders:  Partnering with Adults in Youth Suicide Prevention is a two-day workshop for youth leaders and adults that prepares youth and adults to conduct Connect Youth Suicide Prevention training for teenage audiences.  Connect Youth Leaders is based on Connect Suicide Prevention Training, a SPRC/AFSP Best Practices Registry program.  This training takes into account developmental considerations of high school-age youth as well as safe messaging guidelines.  Connect Youth Leaders:  Partnering with Adults in Youth Suicide Preveniton is available from NAMI New Hampshire for a fee.

Break Free From Depression is a 4-lesson (approximately 4-hour total) classroom curriculum that increases student knowledge of depression and suicide and promotes help-seeking for students in grades 8-12. It was developed by the Swensrud Depression Prevention Initiative (SDPI) of the Children’s Neighborhood Partnerships Program at Boston Children's Hospital. Break Free From Depression is available from SDPI for a fee.

Veterans on Campus is a 30-minute, online, interactive training simulation in which users engage in three simulated experiences that address common challenges affecting student veterans’ ability to succeed in an academic setting. University and college faculty and staff learn how to (1) refer student veterans to appropriate on- and off-campus resources, (2) manage a classroom discussion concerning a veteran-sensitive issue, and (3) speak with a student veteran struggling with psychological distress and academic work and connect them with support services, including mental health services, on and off campus. Online Counseling and Suicide Intervention Specialist (OCSIS) is an online training program that prepares both volunteers and professionals to detect, assess, and mitigate suicide risk in persons requesting or requiring text-only communications. Learners must successfully complete 130 exam items and practice challenges to complete the course, which consists of a highly structured, multimedia, interactive learning experience. OCSIS is available from the QPR Institute for a fee.

At-Risk for Middle School Educators is a 50-minute, online, interactive gatekeeper training program that teaches middle school educators and staff how to (1) identify students exhibiting signs of psychological distress, including depression and thoughts of suicide, (2) approach students to discuss their concern, and (3) make a referral to school support personnel. At-Risk for Middle School Educators is available from Kognito Interactive for a fee.

Chronological Assessment of Suicide Events (CASE Approach) is a flexible interviewing strategy for sensitively and skillfully uncovering suicidal ideation, planning, behaviors, and intent. It was created for use in a variety of settings from outpatient clinics, inpatient units, and school counseling centers to emergency departments and telephone crisis centers. This one-day training is designed to provide participants with intensive experiential training on how to use the CASE Approach effectively. CASE Approach training is available from the Training Institute for Suicide Assessment & Clinical Interviewing (TISA) for a fee.

Developed by QPR Institute, Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR) for Nurses is a 3- to 6-hour online training program that teaches nurses how to detect, intervene with, and manage someone at risk for suicide. It is available from the QPR Institute for a fee.

Developed by the Teen CONTACT Program at CONTACT Crisis Line, Just Talk About It: Suicide Prevention Toolkit is a program designed to train both adults and adolescents on how to assist youth who exhibit signs of suicidal risk. The toolkit is available from the CONTACT Crisis Line without charge. Train-the-trainer, staff training, and parent training is offered without charge in the Dallas area.

Developed by the Tennessee Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services (TDMHSAS) and partners, Shield of Care is an 8-hour, evidence-informed curriculum that teaches juvenile justice staff strategies to prevent suicide in their correctional facility environment. The Shield of Care training packet, including program manual, PowerPoint slides, and videos, is available online without charge.

Offered by the Samaritans of Merrimack Valley, MA, Suicide and Aging: A Gatekeeper’s Workshop is a 4-hour gatekeeper training designed to decrease the incidence of suicide in older adults by training caregivers to (1) better understand the difference between normal aging and mental health problems/challenges, (2) identify common myths about aging and suicide, (3) identify suicide risk and protective factors in older adults, and (4) know under what circumstances their supervisor and/or manager should be informed of a possible suicide risk. Training is free for qualifying institutions within Massachusetts. Outside of Massachusetts check with the Samaritans.

Trevor Lifeguard Workshop is a 1-hour interactive workshop for high school and college-age youth that describes the mental health, suicide, and self-care resources provided by The Trevor Project. There are two versions of the workshop: one for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ) youth and one for general youth audiences. Workshops are given by volunteer facilitators who have completed the 2-day Trevor Lifeguard Workshop training for trainers. The workshop guides youth and young adults in a conversation about how to recognize the warning signs of suicide and how to respond in a way that will keep their peers safe. Workshop training and materials are provided without charge by The Trevor Project.

Real Teenagers Talking about Depression: A Video-Based Study Guide is a 1-hour universal intervention for middle-school and high-school classrooms that focuses on depression education. The purpose of the video and study guide is to increase student knowledge about depression, reduce stigma surrounding depression and increase the likelihood that students with depression will receive help. Real Teenagers Talking about Depression: A Video-Based Study Guide is available from Erika's Lighthouse at no charge.

Suicide Assessment Five-step Evaluation and Triage (SAFE-T) pocket card for mental health clinicians and health care professionals provides protocols for conducting a comprehensive suicide assessment, estimating suicide risk, identifying protective factors, and developing treatment plans and interventions responsive to the risk level of patients.  Laminated SAFE-T cards are available from Screening for Mental Health for a small fee. PDF versions of the card are available online at no charge.

The Youth Suicide Prevention, Intervention and Postvention Guidelines manual provides a rationale for developing protocols and includes discussion on planning for school-based suicide prevention, intervention and postvention. It is available from the Maine Youth Suicide Prevention Program at no charge.

The Youth Suicide Prevention School-based Guide Checklists provide a framework for schools to assess their existing or proposed suicide prevention efforts and provide resources and information that school administrators can use to enhance or add to their existing program. The checklists are available from the Louis de la Parte Florida Mental Health Institute of the University of South Florida at no charge.

Lifelines Postvention: Responding to Suicide and Other Traumatic Death is a 170-page manual with accompanying CD that provides a template for creating a school-based response to the death of a member of the school community by suicide or other traumatic means. It is available from Hazelden for a fee.

After a Suicide: A Toolkit for Schools is an online resource for schools facing the suicide death of a student or other member of the school community. The Toolkit incorporates relevant existing material and research findings as well as references, templates, and links to additional information and assistance. The Riverside Trauma Center Postvention Protocols provide communities and organizations with recommendations for how to respond to suicide deaths in a way that can help restore functioning to the organization, facilitate the grieving process, and decrease the risk of contagion. The Protocols are available from the Riverside Trauma Center without charge.

The Interactive Screening Program (ISP) provides an online mechanism to identify and encourage college students who are at risk for depression, suicide and related problems to seek treatment. It is available from AFSP for a fee.
