Section Ib: SPRC/AFSP Evidence-Based Practices Project

Section I of the BPR lists suicide prevention and treatment interventions that have undergone rigorous evaluation and have demonstrated positive outcomes, drawn from two sources:

This page provides more information about SPRC/AFSP Evidence-Based Practices Project (Section Ib). Information about Section 1a of the BPR can be found on the NREPP Overview page.

Important Note: While NREPP currently accepts applications for review, the SPRC/AFSP Evidence-Based Practices Project stopped conducting reviews in 2005. However, those programs previously identified continue to be listed in this section of the BPR.

Description: SPRC/AFSP Evidence-Based Practices Project

This project was initiated in response to Objective 10.3 of the National Strategy for Suicide Prevention (NSSP), which called for the development of a registry of prevention activities with demonstrated effectiveness for suicide and suicidal behaviors. The goal of this project was to review evaluated suicide prevention programs and classify them according to their demonstrated evidence and to create an online registry of fact sheets for programs determined to be evidence-based.

Review Process, Criteria, and Categorizations

A thorough search was conducted to identify evaluated programs for review. Three expert reviewers rated the quality of each interventions based on 10 criteria: theory, intervention fidelity, design, attrition, psychometric properties of measures, analysis, threats to validity, safety, integrity, and utility.

Programs meeting standards of evidence were classified as either Effective or Promising. Effective programs utilized superior evaluation methods to demonstrate a strong causal link between the program and appropriate outcomes. Promising programs were evaluated using less rigorous methods or demonstrated a moderate causal link between the program and appropriate outcomes. Additional information about the project and the process used to evaluate effectiveness can be found here (PDF).

Based on this review process, twelve programs were classified as "evidence-based." These programs are listed below with links to fact sheets.

To Apply

SPRC and AFSP are no longer conducting evidence-based reviews. To be added to Section I of the BPR, program developers must apply directly to NREPP. SPRC/AFSP staff are available to assist developers of suicide interventions in preparing for NREPP review. Program developers are encouraged to contact Philip Rodgers or Linda Langford for assistance.

List of SPRC Reviewed Evidence-Based Practices

The following twelve programs were reviewed and classified as evidence-based (either Effective or Promising) by SPRC/AFSP. Effective programs, designated below with an asterisk "*", met a higher standard of effectiveness than Promising programs.
