Garrett Lee Smith Campus Suicide Prevention Grantee Meeting
SAMHSA, SPRC
Orlando
Orlando, FL
SAMHSA is pleased to announce that the next Garrett Lee Smith Campus Suicide Prevention Grantee Meeting will be held on February 2-4, 2010 in Orlando, Florida.
We were able to negotiate a very reasonable hotel rate of $99/night plus tax for the meeting. The maximum government lodging rate for Orlando (referred to often as the per diem rate) is $133/night plus tax.
As you know, GLS grantees are now required to attend the Grantee Meeting each year of their grant award. Please plan to send a minimum of three representatives, including the Project Director and the Evaluator, to the meeting. We also recommend that you send the person who manages your program implementation.
Please plan on arriving by Monday afternoon, February 1, so that you can participate in the Campus meeting beginning Tuesday morning, February 2. Please plan to stay through noon on Thursday, February 4.
Our thanks to those of you who completed the recent survey on the 2010 grantee meeting. SAMHSA, SPRC, and Macro cross-site staff will use your feedback to develop an agenda with topics and structure to best serve your needs. Later this week, we will be sending a call for abstracts for the meeting.
Key reminder: All expenses are to be covered by your individual grant funds unless you are on a no cost extension.
Stay tuned for more detailed information, including a call for abstracts. We will send you more information on conference registration, travel, and hotel reservations in the coming months. We look forward to seeing you in February!

Affirming Life: Suicide Prevention and Intervention Among People of Color
National Organization for People of Color Against Suicide
Marlowe Hotel
Cambridge, MA
Since the rates of suicide among African Americans and other people of color have increased throughout the years, there are sources of preventable measures that need to be identified. If there are hundreds of thousands of suicide attempts that occur among people of color each year and each attempt is associated with its own risk factors, what is being done to decrease the numbers? What measures take place that are specifically drawn to people of color? The burden of suicide and suicide attempts is amplified when one considers those close to the victims who are devastated and sometimes traumatized. In 2006, 1,954 African Americans completed suicide in the United States. Of these, 1,669 (85%) were males. The rates of suicide among African American males have been slightly increasing since 2003. Homicide and suicidal behavior including attempts and gang violent behavior is consistently increasing according to the Centers for Disease Control. Because of these increases it is necessary to continue to educate our communities on the roots of this epidemic in an effort to decrease completions, attempts and suicidal behavior.
SPRC staff member(s) N. Mupier will be attending this event.
