3rd Annual Charlotte Out of the Darkness Walk
American Foundation for Suicide Prevention
Freedom Park - 1900 East Blvd.
Charlotte, NC
Every 16 minutes in the United States, someone dies by suicide. This year thousands of men and women will walk in over 150 communities across the United States, each contributing their voices to break the silence surrounding suicide.
By walking in the Out of the Darkness Community Walks to benefit the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP), you will be walking with thousands of people nationwide to raise money for AFSP's vital research and education programs to prevent suicide and save lives, increase national awareness about depression and suicide, and assist survivors of suicide loss.
Many of our participants walk in memory of a loved one lost to suicide.
You can tell their story and even put your loved one's photo on your personal web page. Each walk site has its own unique remembrance activity in which you can participate.

New Developments in Understanding & Treating Non-Suicidal Self-Injury
Maine Youth Suicide Prevention Program
Kelley the Katerer
Portland, ME
One of the most challenging problems for clinicians and other professionals is dealing effectively with non-suicidal self-injury.
Of special concern is that self-injury has recently moved from clinical populations such as those served in hospitals and group homes to the general population including middle, high school and college students.
This presentation will focus on understanding, managing and treating diverse forms of self-injury including arm and body cutting, self-inflicted burning, and excoriation of wounds. Self-injury will be distinguished from suicidal behavior in terms of a number of key characteristics. Eight levels of care in the management and treatment of self-injury will be reviewed.

Recovery International Weekly Self-Help Meetings
Recovery International
Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church, Room 206
Houston, TX
The mission of Abraham Low Self-Help Systems is to use the cognitive-behavioral, peer-to-peer, self-help training system developed by Abraham Low, MD, to help individuals gain skills to lead more peaceful and productive lives.
Goes through 10/26/09 to 12/10/10. The Recovery International system enables participants to see, hear and experience the application of Low's principles for reacquiring self leadership, overcoming the fear of nervous symptoms and strengthening self confidence. With the presentation of "examples" by other members (using the four-step outline), followed by "spotting" techniques, members seek and obtain the help of fellow meeting participants and learn how to practice the Recovery International system more effectively.
