This fact sheet is one of four that summarize data and research on suicidal behavior among particular racial and ethnic populations. It reports on mortality from 2004-2008; suicidal behavior (attempts and ideation); suicide among youth, strengths and protective factors, and risk factors among Blacks living in the United States. A chart of suicide mortality over the 10 most recent years of available data (1999-2008) compares suicide among American Indians/Alaska Natives, whites, blacks and Asians/ Pacific Islanders and Hispanics.

In partnership with SPRC, Harvard Injury Control Research Center analyzed trends in rates and methods of suicide over a twenty-year period. Data is presented in graph form and is categorized by means, age group, sex, and race/ethnicity for 1985 – 2004.
