The Sacramento County Department of Health and Human Services is working with community agencies for eight specific ethnic or age groups to evaluate why certain groups are less likely to seek mental health treatment. Over the next 30 months, the agencies will use the evaluation results to build programs to better meet the needs of these groups. “The mental health system historically has been developed on a European model of treatment,” said Jo Ann Johnson, cultural competence and ethnic services manager for the county’s behavioral health services. “We find that model doesn’t always work well with cultural, racial and ethnic groups, because of differences in beliefs and experiences.” The county ultimately hopes to reduce the rate of suicide attempts and suicides.
