A suicide prevention coordinator role is planned for Counties Manukau as part of a two-year pilot program by the Health Ministry to develop a local suicide prevention plan, paying particular attention to the cultural needs of Maori and Pacific people. The goals of New Zealand’s national suicide action plan are to promote mental health, improve health care for people with mental illness and people who have attempted suicide, and reduce access to lethal means of suicide.
