The role of faith communities in preventing suicide: A report of an Interfaith Suicide Prevention Dialogue
SPRC announces the release of a paper that summarizes an Interfaith Suicide Prevention Dialogue held March 12-13, 2008 in Rockville, Maryland. The dialogue, sponsored by SPRC and funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, included participants from Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, Jewish, and Muslim faith communities. The report includes a consensus statement on suicide and suicide prevention, various faith community perspectives on suicide, and priority opportunities for interfaith initiatives.

Relationship between the Economy, Unemployment and Suicide, 2009. A document providing talking points on the relationship between the economy, unemployment and suicide. After reviewing research, on the subject from around the world, SPRC developed talking points to help suicide prevention leaders communicate clearly and accurately about this most pressing issue. The talking points summarize what is known about these complex relationships and offers suggestions for framing this issue with news media.

Reporting on Suicide

Research indicates that the way suicide is reported in the media can affect vulnerable individuals and contribute to additional suicides and suicide attempts. The following publications can help you report on suicide while minimizing dangers to those who may be at-risk.

At-a-Glance: Safe Reporting on Suicide 2005. This two-page guide for reporters and editors provides a list of recommendations on how to report on suicide while minimizing the risk of contributing to "copycat" suicides. In addition to offering guidelines (based upon Reporting on the Media, below), this publication includes additional resources on suicide and suicide prevention for reporters, editors, and others in the media. Reporting on Suicide: Recommendations for the Media 2001. An evidence-based report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, National Institute of Mental Health, Office of the Surgeon General, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, American Association of Suicidology, and Annenberg Public Policy Center.
