Wilcox HC et al. Drug and Alcohol Dependence. 1 June 2008, 95(1),S60-S73.
This randomized control trial studied the effect of a universal two-year intervention of the Good Behavior Game – implemented by teachers in 19 Baltimore schools to socialize first- and second-grade children for their role as students and reduce aggressive, disruptive behavior – on risk for suicide ideation and attempts. Children who received the intervention, compared to internal controls, experienced subsequent lower incidence of suicidality through childhood and adolescence and into young adulthood. Specifically, participants reported half the lifetime rates of both ideation and attempts. Caregiver suicide ideation had a strong and consistent association with offspring's suicide ideation, especially among males, and retrospective reports of caregiver mental illness and suicide threats were also related to offspring suicide attempts by young adulthood.
