With support from a Garrett Lee Smith Suicide Prevention grant, the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh created UMatter, a comprehensive campus initiative that brought together and aligned the university’s prevention efforts and messaging. UMatter was designed to help improve safety on campus; reduce alcohol abuse, violence, suicidal ideation, depression, and stress; and encourage student retention. The campaign has increased coordination among the university’s support services and helped members of the campus community understand how they can contribute to an environment that promotes responsibility and safety and counters risks to the health and well-being of students.
