In August 2015, Illinois Senate Bill 1793 amended the School Code to require the State Board of Education to develop a model youth suicide awareness and prevention program. This legislation also requires (1) school boards to adapt a youth suicide awareness and prevention policy and (2) educators serving students in grades 6–12 to receive training on youth suicide awareness and prevention. Each educator must receive at least four hours of training every five years.
