Racial and Ethnic Disparities

 

Suicide rates vary by race and ethnicity. In 2017, the age-adjusted rate of suicide among American Indians/Alaska Natives was 22.15 per 100,000 and among non-Hispanic whites it was 17.83. In contrast, the suicide rate among Asian/Pacific Islanders was 6.75; the rate for blacks was 6.85; and the rate among Hispanics was 6.89.

Among American Indians and Alaska Natives, suicide rates peak during adolescence and young adulthood, then decline. This is a different pattern than is seen in the general United States population, where suicide rates peak mid-life.
