Adult Justice System

The adult justice system involves incarcerated individuals ages 18 and older (or 16 and older depending on the jurisdiction). The National Center on Institutions and Alternatives, which provides suicide prevention services in these settings, recommends that screening for suicide risk be done on an ongoing basis and that special attention be given during periods of high risk, such as admission and discharge. For more information, see the center’s Guiding Principles to Suicide Prevention in Correctional Facilities.
