Legislation/Resolutions:
- 2009 – VIRGINIA HB 2300/SB 1117 ENACTED – The bill specifically states that the Department of Education in cooperation with the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services shall develop guidelines for addressing potentially suicidal students as well as identifying the Department as having lead responsibilities for suicide prevention efforts in the Commonwealth.
- 2003 – Senate Joint Resolution No. 312 – Requesting the Secretary of Health and Human Resources, in cooperation with the Secretaries of Education and Public Safety, to formulate a comprehensive Suicide Prevention Across the Life Span Plan for the Commonwealth
- 2002 – Senate Joint Resolution No. 108 – Directing the Joint Commission on Behavioral Health Care to develop a plan and strategy for suicide prevention in the Commonwealth
- Code of Virginia Sec. 22.1-272.1(c) – Regarding a school's responsibility to contact parents when a student is at imminent risk for suicide
Funding Sources:
- 2008 – Re-funded state grantee of Garrett Lee Smith Memorial Act (SAMHSA).
- 2005 – State grantee of Garrett Lee Smith Memorial Act (SAMHSA) funding: Approximately $400,000
- 2002 – Budget cuts reduced the amount of money allocated for suicide prevention through DMHMRSAS to $25,000
- 2002 – VDH received a targeted injury prevention grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; this cooperative agreement brought in more than $900,000 to Virginia for suicide prevention
- 2000 – The state legislature allocated $75,000 each to the Virginia Departments of Health (VDH) and Mental Health, Mental Retardation and Substance Abuse Services (DMHMRSAS) to address suicide prevention in Virginia
