Legislation/Resolutions:
- 2009 – Washington passed House Bill 1244 which made operating appropriations for fiscal years 2007-2009 and 2009-2011, reducing state funds by 10% for the biennium. It includes $70,000 each year for a school-based health curriculum focusing on youth suicide prevention.
- 2007 – the state legislature funded the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction for another two years to support youth suicide prevention programming in schools. $200,000 was allocated to pilot test a curriculum in health classes (see Recent Developments)
- 2006 – SB 6386 – appropriated $100,000 for fiscal year 2007 for a pilot youth suicide prevention program. The office of superintendent of public instruction was charged to work with selected school districts and community agencies to identify effective strategies at preventing youth suicide.
Funding Sources:
- 2008 – Washington's YSPP has an annual budget equalling approximately $300,000:
- $200,000 through a contract with the state Department of Health through June 2007
- Remaining funding comes from training fees, grant-writing and individual
contributions
- 2008 – $100,000 was appropriated for FY 2009 for a pilot program of youth suicide prevention and information.
- 2007 – Youth Suicide Prevention Program receives approximately $350,000 a year from the Department of Health to implement program and training initiatives statewide, and to offer support and consultation to communities, schools and other stakeholders. Additional funding is received by YSPP from training fees, grant makers and foundations, and from generous contributions from individuals.
- 2006 – Washington State Department of Health manages over $750,000 a year for youth suicide prevention. $400,000 comes from SAMHSA to implement the Garrett Lee Smith Memorial Act State & Tribal program with $350,000 provided in state funding for training, curriculum development, and public education.
