SAMHSA Awards States, Campuses and SPRC Suicide Prevention Grants
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) announced 37 grants with a
first year total of $9.7 million to support national suicide prevention efforts. These grants will
support a suicide prevention resource center, suicide prevention efforts on college campus, and state
and tribal youth suicide prevention and early intervention programs across the country. Education
Development Center, Inc. was awarded the grant to continue to operate the Suicide Prevention Resource
Center.
Fourteen states were awarded youth suicide prevention and early intervention strategy grants:
Arizona, Maine, Massachusetts, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, New York, Oklahoma, Tennessee,
Texas, Virginia, and the Native American Rehab Association of NW, Inc. in Portland, Oregon.

Federal Mental Health Action Agenda: ederal Mental Health Action Agenda Announced Building on the
2002 work of The President's New Freedom Commission on Mental Health, the federal government announced the
beginning of a multi-year effort to alter the form and function of the mental health system. Six cabinet level
departments have created a Federal Executive Steering Committee to guide the work of the transformation.
A highlight of the Agenda is "Act immediately to reduce the number of suicides in the nation through
implementation of the National Strategy for Suicide Prevention."
