  • On October 21, SPRC released a white paper titled, Promoting Mental Health and Preventing Suicide in College and University Settings. This paper summarizes what is known about suicidal behavior among college students and recommends strategies to promote mental health and prevent suicide on campuses.

  • Garrett Lee Smith Memorial Act Signed Into Law
    The new law amends the Public Health Act and authorizes $82 million over three years to states, Indian tribes and colleges and universities for the development of youth suicide prevention and intervention programs.

  • SPRC Launches State Suicide Prevention Web Pages SPRC today launched a new web service, the State Suicide Prevention Web Pages, which will serve as a central collection of information about suicide prevention efforts for each state and provide a forum for sharing communication and resources within and across states. Each page includes a brief history of state suicide prevention efforts, highlights of current activities, a link to the state plan, scope of the state plan, state data, legislation, resources, funding sources and more.

  • The National Training Initiative (NTI) for Injury and Violence Prevention has released the Core Competencies for Injury and Violence Prevention for public review. The National Association of Injury Control Research Centers (NAICRC) and the State & Territorial Injury Prevention Directors Association (STIPDA) Joint Committee for Infrastructure Development have created the document with the goal of enhancing the training of injury and violence prevention professional by defining the essential skills and knowledge necessary for successful injury and violence prevention efforts.
