Understanding and using data for youth suicide prevention: a hands-on, crash course for beginners
Catherine Barber, Harvard Injury Control Research Center (HICRC)
Thursday, June 26, 1:00-2:30 Eastern Time
Description:
What would you do if the CDC issued a report citing an increase in youth suicides, and you were suddenly bombarded with calls from reporters, policymakers, and your boss asking, “Are we in the midst of an epidemic?”; “Is our state seeing the same increases?” Where would you go for data? What would you make of the numbers you found? How would you determine whether the changes were significant, a one-year blip, or part of an ongoing trend?
Ms. Barber directs the Means Matter Campaign at HICRC, which provides resources to suicide prevention coalitions on means reduction strategies. Previously, she led the effort to design and pilot-test the prototype for the CDC’s National Violent Death Reporting System and co-founded the National Center for Suicide Prevention Training. Ms. Barber's interests focus on developing and using data from surveillance systems to inform public policy. Her Masters in Public Administration is from Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government.
