News media outlets are increasingly covering the current economic meltdown and often linking it to reports of suicide and suicide attempts. Is the economic crisis really causing increases in suicidal behaviors? And how can we help the media cover this topic more accurately, effectively and safely? This presentation examines the SPRC talking points on the relationships between unemployment, economic crises and suicide, describes the media recommendations for safe and effective reporting, and offers ideas for ensuring that prevention is addressed

Anara Guard, MLS, is Deputy Director of the Suicide Prevention Resource Center. Anara is an editor for the international journal, Injury Prevention, and serves on the board of the Massachusetts and Rhode Island Regional Poison Control Center. She previously was Director of Information and Marketing for Join Together, a Boston University School of Public Health project that promotes substance use disorders prevention and treatment through community strategies. For seven years, she worked at EDC for the Children’s Safety Network national injury and violence prevention resource center. She holds a master’s degree in library and information science and a certificate in maternal and child health.
