A Suicide Prevention Toolkit for Rural Primary Care

The primary care setting presents an excellent opportunity for suicide prevention.  Suicidal patients often visit their primary care providers within days or weeks before taking their lives.

This webinar presents two resources for primary care professionals:

  1. a web-based toolkit for rural primary care professionals and
  2. a training for primary care professionals available in face-to-face or webinar format.

Speaker's Biography

Dr. Peggy West is currently a Senior Advisor at the Suicide Prevention Resource Center (SPRC).  She  previously worked  in the Region X HHS, Health Resources and Services Administration  (HRSA) office.  During this time she served as the representative for HRSA on the Federal Working Group for Suicide Prevention and was actively involved with the development and writing of the National Strategy for Suicide Prevention released in 2001.  Dr West led the development of state suicide prevention efforts in public health in western states.  She has  provided consultation, technical assistance, and guidance to state and local public health programs, and community health centers in development and delivery of primary health care services, prevention programs, behavioral health programs.

Karen Kanefield is the Director of Training and Accreditation at the American Association of Suicidology.  She was previously Director of Education and Professional Development at the American Association for Geriatric Psychiatry where she managed industry-funded grants, educational programming, and new product development.  Ms. Kanefield was with the American Psychological Association for 11 years as Director of the Continuing Education Sponsor Approval System, the office responsible for approval of continuing education providers.  Ms. Kanefield has extensive experience in mental health-related educational program planning and development, and accreditation standards and guidelines across the allied health professions.
