This bar graph presents the current mental health status of suicide decedents in 36 U.S. states by gender. A similar percentage of male and female decedents experienced current depressed mood. When compared to male decedents, a greater percentage of female decedents was identified as having a current mental health problem. For both males and females, the percentage of those in current mental health treatment was lower than the percentage experiencing a current mental health problem, indicating a possible gap between those who may have needed treatment and those who received it.1
