Jennifer Butler, LISW-CP/S

Program Director, South Carolina Department of Mental Health Office of Suicide Prevention

Ms. Butler is the Program Director for the SC Department of Mental Health (SCDMH) Office of Suicide Prevention.  She previously served as the Chief Operations Manager for Adult Intensive Services at Columbia Area Mental Health Center (CAMHC) in Columbia, SC.  She has been in practice for 24 years, with the last 22 years specializing in DBT and suicide prevention.  She has been intensively trained in Dialectical Behavior Therapy, as well as additional DBT trainings focusing on mindfulness, eating disorders and addiction.   She has presented numerous times on DBT, Suicide Prevention and Non-Suicidal Self-Injurious behaviors throughout the region.  She created a specialized Suicide Prevention Program for CAMHC in 2012, an online suicide prevention course for SCDMH employees in 2014 and assisted in implementing an adapted DBT skills program for both CAMHC and G. Werber Bryan Psychiatric Hospital.   She has completed extensive training in Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Sexual Offender Treatment.  In addition, she has been an adjunct professor for Winthrop University’s MSW program for the last seven years.  She has a certificate in Nonprofit Management from Winthrop University’s College of Business, Institute of Management.  She is the President of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) - SC Chapter, in addition to being an AFSP Field Ambassador.  She is a certified instructor with the National Council for Behavioral Health in both adult and youth Mental Health First Aid, as well as a Living Works: Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) instructor, and Connect Postvention Trainer in Mental Health, Social Services and Schools.
